Masami Teraoka is a noted Contemporary artist with over 70 solo exhibitions and works in more than 50 public collections worldwide, including the Met, the Tate, the Smithsonian and the Whitney. Masami’s website describes his recent work as the challenge of “Weaving news media, reality, fantasy, visionary, imaginary and otherworldly reality with humor, line, form and color, commentary, topicality, and a high level of aesthetics …. I try to focus on current issues articulated on a metaphorical level rather than recreating a mere copy of reality. Each narrative creates a fantastical aesthetic world where human folly and dilemma are expressed in such a way that the beauty and ugliness of human activity and psyche thrive in a complex pictorial recipe”.

2009 Tours:

OCTOBER: A small group of Friends toured the Chinatown Boardroom gallery downtown and 5 of the contributing artists spoke to the group. See the "Monster Mash" images above.

APRIL: The Friends' group toured Yvonne Cheng's studio and learned more about her creative process painting her unique Hawaiian women on large canvasses. Click here to see a few photos from the event.

JANUARY:  New Year's started with a special Friends Art Tour to Pegge Hopper's downtown gallery on January 30th for a preview of Pegge's works. After a discussion of the art by the artist, the group adjourned upstairs to her newly constructed pied-de-terre for wine and pupus.

APRIL 4 - Living with Art and Architecture with Joan and Joe
Farrell

The Farrell's discussed their art collection and Joe, an architect, presented his perspective of how their spacious, flowing home serves as a main element in
magnifying their art collection.  He explained how the sculpting of space is the most significant part of architecture.

Mary Mitsuda, whose art makes up part of the Farrell's collection, also shared some thoughts about the interplay of observation and abstraction based on her
recent experiences in Snowden Hodge's summer atelier class, her plein air painting and her non-figurative work.

November 21 - Herb and Nancy Conley Home Art Tour

Duane Choy takes a group on a Garden Tour at TCM.

Periodic tours of artists’ studios and collectors’ homes are special benefits of membership in Friends.

Over the past several years we have visited over a dozen studios, speaking with the artists directly and gaining a better understanding of their works and the creative process. These very pleasant outings are usually offered on Saturdays and include nibbles and liquid refreshment.
