Since 1988, thousands of individuals – school children, residents, visitors – have developed an appreciation and understanding of contemporary art through the exhibition and education programs offered by The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, at its historic Makiki Heights and First Hawaiian Bank locations. Today, the Museum is celebrating its twentieth anniversary by bringing contemporary art directly to the public through its BenchMark project. BenchMark has harnessed the creative energy of twenty of Hawaii’s leading artists and focused it on a utilitarian object--a garden bench--in recognition of The Contemporary Museum’s garden setting. These invited artists have crafted 20 benches from wood, glass, stone, concrete, metal, and ceramics--whatever material has fueled their imaginations. The finished benches are being shown in prominent locations throughout the community. We hope these unique works of art will inspire you to incorporate art into your every day life, and to visit The Contemporary Museum. »September 14 – October 14, 2008Benches on view throughout the community (click to see map) »October 17 – October 26, 2008Benches on view at The Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive, Honolulu.
