This bench was donated to the Benchmark project by First Hawaiian Bank. The stone for this piece was cut for the curbstone at the First Hawaiian Center, the location of The Contemporary Museum’s downtown branch.

The artist has created a design by cutting the stone back in areas and polishing the raised surfaces. He states that “the choice of stone as the principle medium puts limitations on the sculpture’s possible forms” and that it “asks us to take a much longer view of movement and time and our relativity.”
