Mary Mitsuda’s abstract paintings are widely collected and exhibited in Hawaii. However, she is attracted to working in a variety of styles and materials, and here has chosen the medium of silkscreen on fabric. Taking the most basic idea of outdoor seating, she has created a truly functional and portable “seat.” The printed pattern is made up of simple lines configured to resemble a basic park bench form.

In the artist’s words, “This piece is about just going outside and sitting down and enjoying yourself, so I would like invite visitors to bring their own lavalava or picnic cloth or beach towel etc. to enjoy TCM's gardens and the other benches.”
