TITLE: BenchMarked
ARTIST: Deborah Nehmad
MATERIALS: Wood and steel
DIMENSIONS: 18” x 48” x 24”
Deborah Nehmad works with paper on which she burns numbers, letters, and marks in
abstract patterns. Calling herself a “pyrographer,” the artist places the paper on a
sheet of plywood which, in her words, “collects the history of her mark-making. The
plywood, in turn, becomes the matrix for a series of woodblock prints.”
The artist states further that “the BenchMark project provided the perfect
opportunity for me to incorporate one of these woodblocks as an integral part of a
functional artwork. Collaborating with Chris Reiner, (another BenchMark artist)
on the design and construction of the steel base, I varnished the woodblock and
secured it to the base”

Artist statement:
When I create my pyrographic works on paper, I place the paper on a sheet of plywood which collects the
history of my mark making. These sheets of plywood have, in turn, become matrices for
a series of woodblock prints. The Benchmark project provided the perfect opportunity
for me to incorporate one of these woodblocks as an integral part of a functional
artwork. Collaborating with artist Chris Reiner on the design and construction of the
steel base for “benchmarked”, I varnished the woodblock and secured it to the base.”
Note to purchaser:
From an aesthetic point of view, I prefer to allow the steel base of the piece to
rust. However, since this is a functional work of art, if the rust starts to
interfere with the function, I will work with the purchaser to coat the base with a
preservative that will prevent additional rust. STARTING BID: $2520
