Fred Roster"s artist statement
Leonardo da Vinci is at the top of the list of artists I would like to meet because of
the way he combines different kinds of thinking/perceptions. He would frame scientific
thought in aesthetically beautiful ways; to me, that’s very important. I’m perpetually
testing things, trying to figure out ways to do what’s not supposed to be done. Leonardo
didn’t seem to have limitations. He would find ways to do things, invent.
More often then not, I assemble things; I can make that union and integrate disparate
materials and forms. I use various materials to speak of or inform the image. Mixed media
just seems like a larger vocabulary.
In the mid-1970’s I started working more figuratively. Narration became more important. I
didn’t want a person to believe they could understand my work in the brief time they
viewed it at an exhibition. Recently I’ve allowed the work to speak more clearly. Much of
the time the work is topical, dealing with global issues. Invariably there is a personal
subtext.
