Frank Sheriff's Bio Frank Sheriff was born in Yokohama, Japan in 1957, the son of a father whose professional baseball ambitions were put on hold when he was drafted not by the Cubs but by the U.S. Army and stationed in Kobe, Japan. His mother was a Japanese-American whose family moved to Japan after being released from the Crystal City Internment Camp. His father was a civilian employee with the military until his death in 1980. Growing up they moved about every three years living in Japan, Nevada, California, New York, Texas, North Carolina and Hawaii where he graduated from Kaiser High School in 1975. He spent the summer in Korea before starting college at Oregon State University. Frank had started taking art classes at OSU when his father died and he returned to Hawaii to help his mom. He enrolled at the University of Hawaii and earned a BFA in 1984 and MFA in 1989. He received the Art Department’s Outstanding Achievement Scholarship and spent five months traveling throughout Europe and working as an artist in residence with the University of Georgia’s Study Abroad Program in Cortona. Upon his return to Hawaii he worked at Kapiolani Community College as the Koa Gallery Director. The time this position required made it hard to pursue his art career and he decided to work part time as a lecturer with the UH Sculpture Program instead. He has been with the sculpture program ever since. Franks's career highlights include the aforementioned residency in Italy, artist in residence with the Kohler Arts/Industry program, visiting professor at the University of Arizona, public sculpture projects and the Individual Artist Visual Arts Fellowship with the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Exhibitions include: The Contemporary Museum Biennial of Hawaii Artists II, Enriched by Diversity: The Art of Hawaii at the Hawaii State Art Museum, 2300°F-2002 at Grounds For Sculpture, Johnson Atelier, New Jersey, Featured Artist in the 36th Annual Hawaii Craftsman Exhibition and Invited Artist at the Artists of Hawaii 2005 Exhibition. |
